Helical pile installers by city

Helical Piles in Texas

Much of Texas is built on clay that moves. The state soil, Houston Black, covers about 1.5 million acres in 33 counties along the I-35 Blackland Prairie, from north of Dallas to just south of San Antonio. The Soil Science Society of America's Texas soil guide says its clays swell when wet and shrink when dry, opening cracks more than 4 inches wide and 12 inches deep that stay open 90 to 150 days in most years. It also notes that construction on this soil is often plagued by cracking. Helical piers bypass the active clay and bear on firmer soil below, and because they are screwed in rather than poured, they suit tight backyards, existing slabs and wet Gulf Coast sites.

Helical pile cost in Texas

We could not find a Texas installer that publishes helical pier prices, so the figures below are national ranges. Texas jobs can land anywhere in them, depending on how deep the stable layer is and how many piers the slab needs.

Soils and frost depth in Texas

In most of Texas, the controlling design issue is the depth of the active clay zone, not frost. Along the coast, flat ground and slow drainage keep soil wet for long stretches, which adds another source of movement.

Frost depth is set city by city. For the Dallas-Fort Worth region, the North Central Texas Council of Governments' recommended 2021 IRC amendments fill in Table R301.2(1) with a 6-inch frost line, very heavy termite risk and a 5 pound per square foot ground snow load. Each city adopts these on its own. The Panhandle is colder, so check the local table before assuming North Texas numbers apply in Amarillo or Lubbock. Our frost heave guide explains uplift on the shaft, which matters with swelling clay too.

Permits and codes in Texas

Texas has no statewide building department. Instead, Local Government Code Sections 214.212 and 214.216 adopt the IRC and IBC as they existed on May 1, 2012 as the minimum code for cities, which can adopt newer editions with local amendments. Large cities have done so:

CityCode editionEffective
Houston2021 IRC and IBCJanuary 2, 2024
Dallas2021 ICC codesMay 12, 2023
San Antonio2024 ICC codesAdopted January 30, 2025
Austin2024 IRC and IBCJuly 10, 2025
  • Approval: helical piles are usually accepted through an ICC-ES evaluation report under AC358 or an engineer's design. See our permits and codes guide.
  • Repair guidance: the Texas Section of ASCE publishes guidelines for evaluating and repairing residential foundations, now in version 3 from April 2022, though it says they are guidelines, not standards.
  • Coast: to qualify for TWIA windstorm coverage in the 14 first-tier coastal counties and part of Harris County, a property must be certified as built to the windstorm code, per TWIA.

Common projects

  • Foundation repair for slab homes that settled or heaved on expansive clay. See helical piers for foundation repair.
  • Flood-zone construction. After Hurricane Harvey, Houston began requiring new buildings to sit 2 feet above the 500-year floodplain on September 1, 2018, according to FEMA. Owners ordered to elevate may get up to $30,000 through FEMA's Increased Cost of Compliance.
  • Decks, pergolas and patio covers. See helical piles for decks.
  • Ground-mount solar, docks and light commercial pads on ranch land and the Gulf Coast.

How to choose an installer in Texas

Texas has one of the larger groups of companies in our directory, so start with the Texas companies listed on this page and use our guide to hiring a helical pile contractor. Ask whether an engineer designed the repair, how deep the crew expects the active clay to go, and for a torque log for every pier. Compare bids on the same pier count and warranty terms.

Texas helical pile FAQs

Do helical piers work in Texas clay soils?

Yes, when designed for it. The helix plates are set below the zone where clay swells and shrinks, and the engineer accounts for uplift the clay can put on the shaft.

How deep do helical piles go in Texas?

Frost rarely matters; DFW's recommended frost line is just 6 inches. Depth depends on where torque readings show adequate bearing below the active clay.

Do I need a permit for helical piers in Texas?

Most cities require one for foundation repair, additions and new structures, but rules differ between cities and unincorporated county areas. Check with your local building department.
