Helical pile installers by city
Helical Piles in New York
New York combines deep frost, dense neighborhoods and wet ground. Upstate winters push frost well below the surface. Long Island sits on a seaward-dipping wedge of glacial sand and gravel over older sand and clay, with a water table anywhere from 0 to 190 feet down and bedrock up to 2,700 feet deep, according to the USGS New York Water Science Center. Helical piles fit projects where excavators and concrete trucks struggle: attached rowhouses, narrow side yards, waterfront lots and additions tucked against an existing house. They can carry load as soon as they are installed, and low vibration helps protect neighboring buildings that share walls.
Helical pile cost in New York
We could not find a New York installer that publishes helical pile prices, so the figures below are national ranges. Expect New York quotes to reflect local labor rates, access limits in the city and extra depth below frost.
| Source (national) | Price | Scope |
|---|
| Helical Anchors, Inc. | $350 to $700 per pile | Decks, porches and accessory structures |
| Helical Anchors, Inc. | $500 to $1,200 per pile | Additions and light commercial |
| Helical Anchors, Inc. | $2,500 to $3,500 per pile | Marine, dock and boardwalk work |
| SlabLocal | $1,400 to $3,000 per pier installed | Residential foundation repair |
Today's Homeowner puts a typical national foundation repair at $15,000 to $30,000, at about $3,000 per pier. Try our helical pile cost calculator for your layout, and see the helical pier cost guide for a line-by-line breakdown.
Soils and frost depth in New York
New York does not publish one statewide frost depth. The Department of State explains that each local jurisdiction fills in the frost line depth in Table R301.2(1), based on freezing index, soil type, water table and local experience. Call your code enforcement office for the figure that applies to your address.
In New York City, Building Code Section BC 1809.3.1 requires foundations, pile caps and other permanent supports to extend at least 4 feet below the lowest adjacent exposed grade unless they are frost-protected another way. Long Island's sand and gravel generally give helix plates good bearing without dewatering a hole, though USGS notes that groundwater is the only freshwater source for Nassau and Suffolk counties, so subsurface work there is watched closely. Our frost heave guide explains how piles resist uplift in cold soil.
Permits and codes in New York
Outside New York City, the 2025 Uniform Fire Prevention and Building Code took effect on December 31, 2025 and replaced the 2020 edition. The Department of State says its code books are based on the 2024 International Codes with New York changes. Under the residential code, helical piles are usually approved through an ICC-ES evaluation report under AC358 or an engineer's design. See our permits and codes guide.
New York City runs its own code, and the 2022 NYC Building Code has a dedicated helical pile section, BC 1814:
- Every helical pile system must be approved by the Buildings commissioner.
- Allowable axial load is capped at 30 tons and lateral load at 3 tons. Load tests can be skipped only for piles rated 10 tons or less in compression with an approved torque correlation and a safety factor of 2.5.
- Helical piles are not allowed in corrosive ground, such as soil resistivity under 1,000 ohm-cm, pH under 5.5, sulfates over 1,000 ppm, or landfill.
- A special inspector logs torque at every foot of depth plus the final torque, and piles must be spaced at least 4 times the largest helix diameter.
You may also see Specification Bulletin SB 25-001, a 2025 Department of Design and Construction spec that requires at least three helices on the lead section. It governs city sewer and water contracts, not private homes.
Common projects
- Decks, porches and sunrooms that must reach below the local frost line. See helical piles for decks.
- Coastal and flood-zone work. According to the Department of Environmental Conservation, 1,466 New York communities take part in the National Flood Insurance Program, and since 2007 the code has required the lowest floor to sit 2 feet above base flood elevation, with V-zone homes on pilings or columns. In the city, Appendix G also uses base flood elevation plus 2 feet. Elevation projects may qualify for up to $30,000 through FEMA's Increased Cost of Compliance.
- Foundation repair for older homes with settling footings. See helical piers for foundation repair.
- Docks, bulkheads and solar arrays on Long Island, along the lakes and on upstate farmland.
How to choose an installer in New York
Compare the New York companies listed on this page and work through our guide to hiring a helical pile contractor. In the city, ask whether the system has DOB approval and whether the contractor has worked with a special inspector under BC 1814. Everywhere, ask for the evaluation report number, target torque, minimum depth and a torque log for every pile.
New York helical pile FAQs
How deep do helical piles go in New York?
At least below the local frost line, which is 4 feet in New York City and set by each municipality elsewhere. Piles usually go deeper, until torque readings confirm the required capacity.
Are helical piles allowed in New York City?
Yes, under BC 1814 of the NYC Building Code, using a DOB-approved system. Loads are capped at 30 tons axial and 3 tons lateral, and installation needs special inspection.
Do I need a permit for helical piers in New York?
Generally yes for decks, additions and underpinning. The Department of Buildings handles filings in New York City, and the local code enforcement office handles them elsewhere.
