Helical piles in Norcross, Georgia: red clay and fill soils, shallow frost rules, costs and one listed company, Foundation Worx.
Across metro Atlanta and the rest of the Piedmont, homes are built on red clay and saprolite, the thick layer of decomposed rock that the New Georgia Encyclopedia describes as covering much of the region. Saprolite can vary sharply over short distances, and fill placed during grading can settle, which leads to uneven foundation movement.
Frost is shallow here. The Georgia Residential Code requires exterior footings at least 12 inches below undisturbed ground, so designs usually focus on getting through weak fill to consistent bearing. Common jobs include settled foundations, deck and porch footings on sloped yards, and crawlspace support.
